BREAKING THE CYCLE OF DRUG MISUSE
For those involved in the cycle of drug misuse, initial casual involvement has become more frequent, more serious and, for some, more destructive. Adullam's response to drug misuse is to provide options for those who want an alternative to a continued dependency on drugs. This service is delivered in both residential and community based settings. A practical programme Participants are required to complete a comprehensive and structured programme. This will include group work, counselling, community tasks and a move-on programme. The programme explores the kind of issues that might trigger or sustain drug misuse and looks at options and strategies for change. A keyworker or counsellor is available through every stage of the programme. "I've definitely seen people improve within themselves, to the benefit of everyone around them through community work, through doing tasks." Individuals who come to one of Adullam's Drug projects must commit themselves to each aspect of the programme. Moving-On In the residential schemes Move-on accommodation is an essential part of the process. The move-on houses provide a bridge between rehabilitation and establishing an independent life. Some of Adullam's residents have been re-united with family and friends they were initially separated from through the effects of drug misuse. "To us, we've left the dirt behind and made a fresh start. The children are given a new start, as they haven't had it too good in the past." At Adullam, we seek to provide opportunities for effective drug-free living. We can't guarantee that people will stop using drugs, but we can create opportunities whereby people can become successful in drug-free living. "My attitude is a lot more positive since being with Adullam. I didn't think life was worth living until I came here. "It changed my erratic, irrational life-style to a controlled and rational one." "Five years ago I entered the programme as an alcoholic. I had lost my wife and children. Through Adullam, I have gained a life that I had really lost." "It proves that you can do something if you put your mind to it". "I can start to see a future now, whereas before I couldn't." "I've definitely got plans for the immediate future. I got divorced last year, but since being on this programme I've spoken to my ex-wife and we are looking forward to a reconciliation. Adullam has given me the equipment and the tools I need to cope with future problems." |
